Sustainable Agriculture

Demonstration Organic Farm
The Trust runs a well established organic farm, producing a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, as well as rearing livestock and poultry.  The farm is an excellent example of a successful combination of ecology and economy - minimising it's environmental impacts and making money by selling its produce.  It is also used as a test-bed for many of Dr. Haller's ideas, for example using the leaves from the Neem tree as a pesticide on crops and using waste water from the fish farm as a nutrient-rich source of irrigation water.

A medicinal plant section has been set up with Artimisia (malaria), Aloe vera, Aloe forex, Lemon grass and Turmeric.

Various farmer trainings and field days are held at the farm.

Funded Projects:

Baobab Trust in cooperation with JuaNguvu received a small grant under PAMS (Partnership Actions for Mitigating Syndroms of Global Change)

The project “ Promotion of low-cost biogas digesters for renewable fuel production on small scale farms” addresses the problem that wood is still a main energy source causing serious deforestation. The project aimed to develop training material and a pilot training for two biogas digesters. Two polyethylene digesters have been set up.  A student  collected data for the training material and is available in English and Kiswahili.

This project combines well with the cattle feedlot, completing a cycle of nutrients: Cow manure - biogas - slurry - crops or feeds for cattle.

Biogas training is also carried out on request at a small cost.
